A Community of Eldercare Embodying Jewish Values and Traditions
Daughters of Sarah Senior Community draws its inspiration and strength from the Jewish values upon which committed Jewish men and women founded it in 1942, and we respect and foster Jewish traditions that evoke cultural identity and a feeling of safety and familiarity among our Jewish residents. We are careful to maintain a Jewish atmosphere throughout our campus. There are a variety of religious and cultural celebrations held during the year. Sabbath services are held each Friday evening and Saturday morning, and rabbis are available for counseling and personal visits. In response to the diversity of our resident, other religious leaders are available.
At The Massry Residence we believe that life is, indeed, with people, and we do all we can to encourage the men and women who live at The Massry Residence to socialize, participate in our programs, and out in The Massry Residence bus on planned adventures to area arts, dining and recreational destinations
Sensitive to the tremendous impact that giving up long-held homes may have on the lives of the men and women who move our assisted living facility, Daughters of Sarah Senior Community offers the services of a Social Worker to help residents with any emotional issues they may have during their transition to The Massry Residence.

Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
We started in 1942 with 19 beds for elderly Jewish men and women who had no one to care for them. Community volunteers went door to door to raise the money to buy and renovate an existing home. Since then, we've moved twice as demand for our services grew. Our Nursing Center alone now has 210 beds, and we offer 56 beautiful, spacious assisted living one and two bedroom apartments with lots of natural light.
What is your primary product or service?
We are primarily a long-term care residential and therapeutic community. exist to care for elderly men and women who cannot be cared for at home. We have two levels of care: assisted living in The Massry Residence, and skilled nursing in the Nursing Center.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
It became clear to the Jewish community after the Depression that there were members of that community seriously at risk due to their advanced age or frailty, that we needed to make provision to care for them. That is still our mission.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
We are the only kosher long-term care organization in upstate New York east of Rochester. We are also a faith-based, not-for-profit organization, which means that our bottom line is not established by shareholders with economic expectations, but by the larger Jewish community, who expect that we provide high-quality care according to our Jewish values and traditions.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
Both of our present facilities and all of our services exist on our one beautiful campus in Albany, where we have been able to preserve much of our wilderness setting and to add to it protected wandering gardens with fruit trees, bushes, flowers, and where our residents can enjoy outdoor gardening activities according to their abilities. We expect that we will continuously expand our offerings and services but at present have no plans in place.
